The Prisoner

November 23, 2010

The girl scowled and looked around the room. She didn’t know why she was here it wasn’t her fault. This was just stupid and a waste of time. Some people just think they can blame something on her and think they have power over her…pathetic people. She looked up at the man next to her – her lawyer...ha ha ha…he didn’t do anything and sure wasn’t helping her at all. He just seemed to make matters worse. She looked across the room at the prosecutor. He just glared at her and then had the nerve to wave at her. Looking behind her, she saw her family crying and staring back at her with pleading wounded eyes. Pathetic she thought. They don’t understand me and just judge me. I have to take care of myself this isn’t my fault. She couldn’t trust anybody but herself and her friends that were there for her. A small voice inside her head said, “Where are they now?” …she huffed what a stupid thought - they were waiting for her to get back to the house that is why they weren’t here..duh. The door across the room opened and a tall man walked in dressed in a robe. Her lawyer said he was the judge and that she at least needed to show respect to him if she wouldn’t to anybody else. Respect…blah when they respected her then she would respect them. This whole stupid court thing was all about blaming her and not about anything else. When would they wake up and realize this. She had things to do come on already. The judge banged his gravel and looked towards her; she smirked and looked at him, what a big goof. “Sarah, you have been brought to court today on multiple charges. An innocent man was murdered and you are the lone suspect. We have enough evidence against you to prosecute you. You need to wipe that smirk off your face and start thinking about the events that lead you to this day and the reason why you are standing in front of me. Do you have anything to say?” What a jerk! She rolled her eyes and looked at her lawyer. He gave her a stern look and then asked the judge for a recess. Her lawyer, Kevin, led her to the conference room. “Sarah aren’t you even slightly concerned about the consequences of your actions? You need to stop protecting your friends and tell the truth about the murder. Do you know you could end up in jail for life or get the death penalty? You need to stop living in fairy tale land and realize that you are in trouble and need help. And you need to realize that right now. You are on a path of destruction and you need to get off of it.” Sarah rolled her eyes again. “Look you don’t know me and you don’t know anything about me, my parents are paying for you to help me so why don’t you just do what they are paying you to do and quit judging me”. “Sarah, I’m not the judge, I’m trying to help you before it is too late. You need to tell the truth about your friends and then maybe the judge will go easier on you”. “WHAT? Are you crazy, they are my true friends and I’m not snitching on them. I didn’t do anything wrong and I am not saying I am. I’m innocent.” “Sarah, you aren’t innocent. They have proof. You need to realize your situation and you need to do it now!”. “ Kevin, stop lecturing me about what I need to do! You need to think about what you need to be doing FOR ME!” Kevin slowly shook his head and walked back toward the courtroom. Sarah laughed aloud for a second, Kevin really was a wimp. Nobody could do anything to her because she didn’t do anything. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anybody could understand that right? Sarah walked back to the courtroom oblivious to her current condition and the seriousness of the situation. The judge called the court to order. Her lawyer said that she had nothing new to say on her behalf that she was sticking with the original testimony. The judge looked at the prosecutor and asked if he had anything more to add. The prosecutor (kind of handsome dark haired man) stood up and walked onto the floor “Yes your honor, Sarah, here states that she is innocent. That the death of this innocent man wasn’t her doing and that she was in the wrong place. But she has shown record of being in the wrong place at the wrong time on many different occasions. She feels no remorse and shows no signs of understanding of her predicament. Therefore, I ask the court for the death penalty. She deserves no special treatment and she deserves no mercy of the court. Just sign her over to me Judge and I will take care of everything. You won’t have to worry about a thing and she won’t be your problem anymore.” Sarah looked up at the statement, WHAT? She hadn’t done anything wrong. What was wrong with these people? The judge looked at Sarah and stated that he was taking a recess and would give his ruling shortly. Sarah smirked at the prosecutor and her lawyer, then turned, and went outside for the rest of the recess. Her lawyer came and got her about 7 minutes later and they went back inside the courtroom. The judge came back into the room and looked directly at her. “Sarah, I want to help you but I’ve asked for your comments and you refuse to show any acknowledgement for your guilt. You refuse to ask forgiveness because you believe you have done nothing wrong. How can I offer you help if you refuse to acknowledge that you need it? Therefore, I have decided on your punishment. Because my dear no matter how often you tell yourself that you are innocent, the evidence shows that you are guilty, and you need to accept your guilt. This is your fault and nobody else. You need help but unless you realize you need help and accept responsibility for your actions then you can’t receive the help that has been offered to you. Sarah Araz I sentence you to death by lethal injection 30 days from today. Until that time, you will serve in the state prison. Your sentence is to begin effective immediately.” Suddenly Sarah’s world changed. This had to be a dream. Sarah looked back at her parents and they were crying and holding each other. All the sudden it hit her. She was about to be sent away for what her friends did, not her. Her parents were crying because of her. Where were her friends? They should have been here for her really, shouldn’t they? Nothing made sense anymore and she didn’t know how she had let it get this bad. She looked at Kevin and asked for help. “Sarah, I asked you repeatedly for evidence against your friends but you refused to give it, I can’t do anything for you right now. If you would be honest with me then I might be able to get enough evidence for an appeal”. “Kevin, I’ll tell you everything just don’t let me die!”

30 days later………Sarah sat in her own little prison. Things had changed tremendously in the last 30 days. She realized that she was indeed guilty. She had watched her friends kill that man and she didn’t do anything to stop them. She was just following the crowd and didn’t want to say anything that they wouldn’t like. She had watched that man be beaten, and then stabbed multiple times by her friends…….what was wrong with her? She started crying and curled into a fetal position on her bed. She was going to die and nobody could save her. Kevin had came by earlier but had just sadly shook his hand and said “I’ve done everything and taken everything before the judge. Now we just have to wait.” He had left shortly after that to go and see if he could plead her case before the judge – that was 4 hours ago and time of her execution was only 20 minutes away…..she didn’t want to die!

The deputy walked in the room and told her it was time. She sadly with tears streaming down her face was lead to a small room and strapped to a gurney. Her hands and feet were bound and they told her that it would only be a few more minutes before it would all be over. Where was Kevin? She slowly began to accept her death and prayed to God that she would be forgiven of her sins and accepted into heaven. The doctor and a nurse then entered the room. He injected a needle into a big vial and lifted it upside down towards the light. Sarah could see the liquid slowly filling the syringe. The doctor walked up to her and put a tourniquet onto her arm. The nurse started an IV and then the doctor carefully and slowly attached the syringe to the IV tubing. The doctor looked down at her and asked if there was anything, she would like to say before he started. “I just want to say I’m sorry. I was there when that man was being killed and I did nothing to stop it. I wish I would have but I didn’t Please forgive me.” Tears blurring her vision, she turned back to the doctor and told him she was ready. The doctor began slowly injecting the medication into the IV, the last thing Sarah remembered was a burning in her arms that raced inside her veins, and then she remembered seeing darkness.

*BANG BANG BANG* The nurse walked to the door and opened it. Kevin stumbled in - “STOP, you have to stop. The judge has revoked his order. “The doctor glanced up “What are you talking about?”. “ Evidence has been brought forward and the true killer has been caught. Can you save her?” “We don’t have to save her; we only gave her the sedative. I was just about to give the lethal dose when you busted through the door.” “Thank God”.

*BEEP, BEEP, BEEP* Sarah woke up to this annoying sound. Where was she? This couldn’t be heaven and it couldn’t be hell could it? She turned her head and saw Kevin and the judge sitting in the same room that she was suppose to die in. The judge saw her move and quickly moved to the table. “Sarah are you ok?” “What are you doing here? Why am I not dead” “Sarah, we caught the murderer and he is going to be punished for his crimes. We caught the doctor just in time to save you”. “Judge, I’m sorry but I was there and I didn’t do anything to stop the death of that man. I deserve to die too.” “Sarah, you aren’t going to die. We will talk soon ok?” The judge walked out of the room and Kevin just looked down and smiled at her.

2 year later,…..Sarah smiled at her husband and her daughter playing across the field. She couldn’t remember being so happy and feeling so free. Sarah had changed her life completely after “death” as she called it. The judge had ordered her to parole of 4 years and community service. She continued doing community service with young teenagers to this day. She realized that they needed help and she would be there for them when they would accept it and help them get their life back. She smiled and looked up at heaven. Thank You God for LIFE.

What is the purpose and meaning of this story?

SARAH – This is us. We are not innocent in fact we are all guilty of murder. Jesus died for our sins on a cross and multiple times the world denies his death. We are sinners saved by grace through the blood of Jesus Christ. Only we realize and accept that he died for our sins, that we are guilty sinners, and repent of our sins can we truly be set free. Don’t forsake Jesus today, you may be dead tomorrow.

• Proverbs 27:1 – Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth

• John 3:15 – That whosoever believeth in him should not perish: but have eternal life.

• 2Co 6:2 - (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

• Hebrews 2:3 – How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.

• James 4:14 – Wheras ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away.

JUDGE – The judge is GOD. He offers his help to us many, many times but we refuse it. We smirk in the face of our GOD and JESUS CHRIST when we try to do things our way and don’t accept his help and trust in ourselves. Trust in GOD. God’s timing is everything! We must seek HIS will for our lives and trust in him even when there seems to be no hope. He will rescue us when it is HIS time and it will never be too late. He will never leave us alone. Everything and anything is possible with CHRIST!

• Mark 10:27 – And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with GOD all things are possible.

• James 4:10 – Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

• 1Co 4:5 - Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

• 2Co 7:10 - For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

• II Thessalonians 3:3 – But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you and keep you from evil.

• I Peter 5:10 - But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

LAWYER (KEVIN) – This is JESUS CHRIST. He goes before GOD and is our intercessor. He pleads our case even though we are guilty sinners. Thank you Jesus for not only dying for us but also for being our intecessor before the Father.

• Isaiah 59:16 - And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

• Hebrews 7:25 – Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

PROSECTOR – This is the devil. He wants to see us in death. He wants to “help” us and lead us into a life of eternal damnation. There is no hope, or life in the devil’s world only death and destruction. He doesn’t want what is best for you but the worst!

• John 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

• John 10:10 - The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

• I Peter 5: 8 – 9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

SARAH’S FRIENDS – The temptation of this world. Many times in life we can be in the “wrong place” or the “wrong time”. I encourage you to realize that when this occurs that you are NOT where God intended for you to be. He would never put you in a wrong place or a wrong situation! Seek GOD fo direction and leading in your life. The Holy Spirit will be with you every step of the way too.

• James 4:7 – Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hears, ye double minded.

• James 4:17 – Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

AFTER-“DEATH”- When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. Our lives have to change and bring nothing but glory to HIS name! We must put off the old sinful life. We will never be perfect but we need to repent for our sins and pray daily and LIVE FOR GOD! Don’t look back at your old life with regret, vengeance or sadness because your life is now WHOLE and COMPLETE with JESUS CHRIST! Rejoice in your salvation and ETERNAL life.

• Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

• Col 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
